Macagua and Caruachi Dams

The Macagua and Caruachi dams are located on the Rio Caroni a few kilometers from its outfall into the Rio Orinoco in Venezuela. These projects are part of the Central Hidroelétrica Simón Bolívar system of dams in Guri and Tocoma (currently under construction). Together they form one of the world’s largest hydroelectric complexes. 750,000 barrels of oil are saved by means of the complex every day according to the operator. As a comparison, the daily consumption of oil in Germany in 2008 was 2.7 million barrels.

Macagua Dam

Spherical roller bearings with chromium coating were fitted in the roller gates for the turbine inlets in the Macagua dam. This coating improves the running characteristics and reduces the risk of corrosion.

Caruachi Dam

INA plain bearings were fitted in the segment gates of the Caruachi dam.
The nine segment gates must withstand enormous water pressure.
They can be opened and closed thanks to over 40 INA spherical plain bearings.
